2011 IEEE PPIC Guest Program June 20 – 21, 2011
We are also planning to take advantage of our great Nashville location to have a very entertaining Guest / Spouse program. In 1994 the conference was held at the Opryland Hotel & Conference Center. But next year we have decided to use a downtown hotel that’s closer to many historic sites, dining and shopping opportunities. The committee is finalizing details and the following schedule is representative of what we plan. Tours will begin in the morning after breakfast and finish by mid-afternoon, allowing some free time for shopping, additional site-seeing, golf or a rest in the hotel.
Stan and Charlene Merritt will be your hosts for the tours on Monday and Tuesday. We have some ideas from our local planners:
• A visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to see items like Hank Williams’ ivory suit stitched with musical notes, Roger Miller’s 11 Grammy awards and Trisha Yearwood’s application to work as a tour guide at the original museum (she got the job).
• A stop at The Ryman Auditorium, the grand building of Country Music.
• The Hermitage is the home of President Andrew Jackson restored to its 1837 appearance. You will be greeted by costumed historical interpreters who will accompany you throughout your tour.
o Ellendale’s will supply a lunch of contemporary Southern American cuisine featuring locally grown produce.
• The Belle Meade Plantation is known for breeding championship thoroughbred horses. It is one of the most elegant southern mansions built.
o Lunch will be served in the Pineapple Room where grand ladies met for lunch and brides that held their weddings on the property would hold their receptions. It overlooks the gardens at Cheekwood.
• Adjacent to Belle Meade is the Cheekwood mansion noted for its Botanical Gardens. The Cheek family started Maxwell House Coffee and built the facilities between 1928 -1932.
• A trip to Lynchburg will take you through Jack Daniel’s Distillery, home of the familiar “Old No. 7 Brand” sipping whiskey.
o After the tour, lunch will be at Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House Restaurant, celebrating its 100th year of operation. Lunch will be two meats, four side dishes, homemade bread and a mouth watering desert.
• A trip to Franklin for shopping in the downtown area, winner of the Great America Main Street award.
o Lunch at Puckett’s Grocery. Founded by the Puckett family in the 1950s, Puckett’s served as a country store to several communities in Williamson County.
Local Committee
As the program is not yet finalized, please let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions for our local committee. We are also looking for additional folks who are interested in helping with this conference.
On behalf of our local committee, I think the 2011 PPIC Conference in Nashville will be a memorable event. We look forward to making this a learning opportunity at the conference, but also offer a destination where you can unwind and enjoy yourself before returning to work.
We will work on adding the 2011 information to the www.pulppaper.org website as soon as possible after this year’s San Antonio conference. In the meantime if you have any questions or want to volunteer for the “Local” Committee please do not hesitate to contact me:
