Blake Lloyd - Blake was born, raised, and educated in various cities in Ontario Canada where he currently resides. He obtained a co-op electrical engineering degree from University of Waterloo in 1983. During his university work-terms he held positions in the Research divisions of Xerox Canada and Ontario Hydro.
Upon graduation, Blake worked in software development for Perle Systems where he was responsible for developing protocol conversion and ATM control software for several large US and Canadian banks. In 1986 he joined the Research Division of Ontario Hydro as an Engineer/Scientist. During his time at Ontario Hydro he conducted research into advanced measurement, testing, and diagnostic monitoring techniques for rotating machines and insulation systems. He lead several multi-million dollar R&D projects including one that resulted in the first commercial diagnostic expert system for monitoring large turbine generators. In 1989 he won the Ontario Hydro New Technology Award for his efforts. During this period he also participated in several research efforts related to on-line partial discharge testing of rotating machines.
In 1990, along with colleagues from Ontario Hydro Research, Blake co-founded Iris Power, with the goal of commercializing the theoretical research from Ontario Hydro to create a manufacturing company of test equipment for high voltage machines. Initially, his efforts were focused on product development where he was the principle architect of Iris’s line of partial discharge related instrumentation and analysis software. As the company grew and expanded its international presence and product offering, he held positions as Vice President of Sales, and Vice President of Field Service. Blake is still employed at Iris and again leads the Product Development group..
Blake has been an active member of the IEEE for 25 years where he is currently a Senior Member. In 1992 he was a member of the IEEE/PES Integrated Hydro Generator Monitoring Subcommittee. In 2002 he acted as the Canadian Expert – IEC Technical Committee No 2: Rotating Machines, Working Group 26. In 2003 he received an R&D 100 Award for development of HydroTrac, a continuous PD monitor for hydrogenerators. In 2006-2007 he was the chair of the IEEE/IAS Pulp and Paper Technical Committee. He is presently on the Board of Directors of the IAS in the role of Vice President.
